Performances and installation by Kathryn Andrews entitled ‘Voix de Ville’, 2012
Born in 1973 in Mobile, Alabama; lives and works in Los Angeles.
Kathryn Andrews’ works often oscillate between minimalism and Pop art. For Art Parcours Andrews’ stages a number of Vaudevillian acts along the banks of the river Rhine. Vaudeville was a highly popular form of performance-based entertainment in the United States around the turn of the 20th century. In Voix de Ville (2012), clowns, acrobats, magicians and musicians perform against large sculptures which backdrops are covered with images taken from stock photography creating a sculptural Pop frieze. Instead of retaining the distance of a stage or the parameter of a circus ring, the performances take place without such constrains. Andrews’ examines how Performance art in the context of art fairs has become a sideshow and perhaps an uneasy form of entertainment.
