The House of the 28 Doors

The  THE HOUSE OF THE 28 DOORS by the Berlin- Dresden artist group BEWEGUNG NURR ( Florian Göpfert/ Alekos Hofstetter/ Christian Steuer) deals with the situation of migrants and refugees who come to Europe under the most difficult circumstances and deprivations in search of a decent life- particularly focused on those who have come to Germany and Berlin.

THE HOUSE OF THE 28 DOORS multi-functional architecture is designed to be a stage and a room for communication: The sculpture consists of 28 lined-up doors that symbolize the 28 current countries of the European Union, encompassing a large room. Whereas the sculpture seen from the outside seems to be hermetically sealed, the transparent roof construction opens up the architecture towards the sky. Within the rotunda’s architecture the distinction between inside and outside, between within the European Union and beyond its borders, between successful and unsuccessful escape manifests. Inside, three personal stories of refugees currently living in Berlin are shown on three monitors. The video installment links the individual memory of the refugees with the question of what role the continuing refugee crisis has in collective European memory. The doors must be opened!
