Art events canceled due to mine disaster in Soma

Many art events in Turkey have been canceled or postponed due to the mine disaster and mourning for at least 285 mine workers who died as a result of an explosion in a coal mine in Manisa’s Soma district on Tuesday.

All performances scheduled for May 14 and 15 as part of the ongoing 19th İstanbul International Theater Festival have been canceled, the İstanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) said in a press release issued Wednesday.

An eagerly anticipated concert on Thursday by the German orchestra Staatskapelle Berlin under the baton of world-famous maestro Daniel Barenboim at the Zorlu Performing Arts Center (PSM) in İstanbul has also been canceled, the İKSV added.

The Ankara-based State Opera and Ballet General Directorate also issued a statement announcing that all performances scheduled to take place until May 20 in its six local branches (İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Antalya, Mersin and Samsun) have been canceled due to the mining disaster.

A concert by the Cuban band Afro-Cuban All Stars at the İstanbul Congress Center that was going to take place on Friday has been postponed to an as-yet-undetermined date, the event’s organizers said. The performance was part of the Avea Extraordinary Concert series, sponsored by the Turkish GSM operator Avea.
