A Matter of Tail – Kuyruk Meselesi

Traveling from Osmanbey to the 4. Levent by metro, I try to imagine the old state of the area aboveground. There were plane trees for sure, but probably also plane trees, maple, chestnut and oak trees.

With Gonca, we ring the bell of the house of the aunt surrounded by a garden. Elegant, she looks like a real Istanbul lady. We take our place on her balcony, a plum tree accompanies us with its shade, offering us with a an intense green panorama.

For a couple of hours, together with my trainee Sena, we record the conversation of Gonca and Mrs. Firdevs with a camera. In the Video sometimes our whispers can be heard. I deliberately want them to remain. For a long time Gonca has searched for a means to trace the different lines of her ancestors. When she came across the drawings , she finally has discovered the starting point she needed.  We are as well, in all our presence and with our whispers, a part of this search now.

Mrs. Firdevs, while going through her notebook, get’s carried away by the past. More then the bird, the crocodile, she has drawn skillfully with a pen, she remembers her young teacher, who had a crippled arm. As a student at Cagaloglu Girls’ Vocational School, he must have been so meticulous with his lines and drawings, that then old ladies voice is still full of love and respect when she tells about those lessons.

Firdevs and her school friend Lamia were one of the first school girls of the young republic. In a photograph, two outstandingly beautiful young girls wearing stylish dresses and shoes can be seen. Lamia is wearing sunglasses, cheerful and self-confident, almost with hoping steps both girls are approaching the Camera.

Being a student at the medical school remained a dream of a young girl. After being called “Hayriye” by most family members and friends for years, in her old age she decided to put the name Firdevs again on the doorbell. It is a Persian name A name, meaning garden and paradise in Persian. As Gonca implies a connection between  her name and the mysterious, beautiful nature drawings she has made in the natural history lessons, her aunt’s eyes fill with tears of joy. Caressing her niece with her eyes, she utters,  “I’m glad you took my note book.”

Osmanbey’den Dördüncü 4. Levent’e metro ile giderken, yolculukta yeraltından geçtiğim alanın eski halini hayal ediyorum. Çınar ağaçları vardı mutlaka, ama muhtemelen kayın, akçaağaç, kestane ve meşe de bulunuyordu.

Gonca ile, bahçeli bir sitede bulunan teyzesinin evinin zilini çalıyoruz. Firdevs Hanım zarif, tam bir İstanbul hanımefendisi gibi. Balkonunda oturuyoruz, bir erik ağacı bize yemyeşil bir manzara sunarak gölgesiyle eşlik ediyor.

Bir iki saat boyunca Gonca ve Firdevs Hanım’ın söyleşmesini kamerayla kaydediyoruz, stajyerim Sena ile birlikte.  Çektiğimiz videoda, bazı yerlerde fısıltımız duyuluyor. Özellikle kalmasını istiyorum. Gonca uzun zaman boyunca kuşaklarının farklı yaşantılarının izlerini sürmek için bir araç aramış. Teyzesinin Tabiat Bilgisi derslerindeki çizimlerine rastlayınca, ihtiyacı olan hareket noktasını bulmuş. Biz de şu anda varlığımızla bu arayışın artık bir parçasıyız, fısıltımızla birlikte.

Kendi not defterini karıştırırken Firdevs Hanım, geçmiş zamana dalıyor. Mürekkeple ustaca çizmiş olduğu kuş, timsah, bitkilerden çok, kolu sakat olan genç hocasını hatırlıyor. Cağaloğlu Kız Meslek Okulu’nda öğrenciyken, çizgilerine çok özen göstermiş olmalı ki, yaşlı kadının sesi hala o dersleri anlatırken sevgi ve saygı dolu.

Genç cumhuriyetin ilk kız öğrencilerindendi Firdevs ve okul arkadaşı Lamia.  Bir fotoğrafta, şık kıyafet ve ayakkabılarıyla iki dünya güzeli genç kız görülüyor. Lamia güneş gözlüğü takmış, neşeleri ve özgüvenleri tam vaziyette, zıplayan adımlarla kameraya doğru yürüyorlar ikisi.

Tıp okumak da hayal dünyasında kalmış genç kızın. Hayatı boyunca çoğu aile ferdi ve dostu tarafından “Hayriye” ismiyle anıldıktan sonra, yaşlılıkta ziline tekrar Firdevs ismini yazdırmış. Farsça’da bahçe ve cennet anlamına gelen bir isim. Gonca, Tabiat Bilgisi derslerinden yaptığı gizemli güzel doğa çizimleri ile ismi arasında bir bağ kurunca teyzesinin gözleri doluyor mutluluktan. “İyi ki not defterimi almışsın” diyor.

Sanatçı Gonca Sezer’in “Kuyruk meselesi” sergisi 10 Mayıs – 9 Hazıran 2018 tarihinde Gama Galleri’de açılmıştır
