One Week Music Festival in Istanbul

Sound Ports Istanbul is an independent music and culture Festival, taking place in Istanbul for one week between March 24 and April 2 taking palce at different venues in both sides of the city.

First edition of the Festival in 2016 was created as a musical bridge between two Mediterranean cities – Tel Aviv and Istanbul. During 3 days in Tel Aviv, 4 days in Istanbul we established a new space for contemporary music soundscape of these two cities blended together. Many things happened during this year and changed our political and social situation. Sound Ports Istanbul 2017 is a response to this change.

This year theme – „Journey Within“ reflects searching for a peace through music and culture in these turbulent times. The program of 2nd edition of the Festival consists of shows of local and international artists, who explore psychedelic music and blend it with rituals, forgotten knowledge, rhythm and groove.

The festival is organized by Gulbaba Music Agency (Sounds from Istanbul) and takes place at Kargaart, Arkaoda, Bina / Kadiköy and IKSV Salon.

It starts with two concerts of local bands in Kadikoy’s Kargaart on March 24th and a DJ session of  Scratchy Sounds in Arkaoda. Night opener – Kam Ata explores traditional Central Asian instruments and creates their unique sound inspired by Dark Wave and Post-Punk.  Turkish ritual-oriented band Yakaza Ensemble blends traditional instruments with electronic sounds into psychedelic contemporary music.

On March 25th brand new venue of Kadikoy – Bina will host TSU! – solo project of Hakan Dedeoğlu with his atmospheric and folky instrumental songs. TSU! will be supported by Duo Gölgesiz of Ömer Sarıgedik and Barış Demirel (instrumental dub/ ambient).

Night in Flamme on March 29th will be the time of Astronauts of Sound. Islandman of Tolga Böyük is a super fresh, groovy and mind opening project. Packed with mechanical, synthesized sounds and based on deep exploration of various musical genres from Afro Beat to Kraut Rock. Islandman will be followed by DJ sets of Assaf Samuel – known from the best festivals such as Mid Burn and Burning Man and Mystic Flow – local explorer of psychedelic & mid – tempo.

Salon IKSV on March 31st will sound with Touareg blues and Western rock music from Mali thanks to Tamikrest, supported by psychedelic berlin based folk project TAU.

Just a day later on April 1st Salon IKSV will host a unique project of Buttering Trio and Ester Rada. World acclaimed masters of psychedelic trip-hop will meet for the first time with Ethiopian soul singer. Brand new collaboration project of Da Poet and Idil MeseRain Lab will open the night.

Sound Ports İstanbul 2017 Closing Party will take place on 2nd April in Arkaoda. Two intimate concerts of TAU and Islandman will be followed by live act of Rejoicer – mastermind of Buttering Trio and Raw Tapes label.

Besides concerts and DJ sessions, Sound Ports presents an exclusive screening of award–winning music documentary “Wonderful Kingdom of Papa Alaev” on March 30th in Bant mag. Bina/ Kadikoy.
